The legendary sports car manufacturer is entering a new era with a high-performance hybrid powertrain designed for the track.

After years of speculation and 'spy' shots from the Nürburgring, Porsche has finally confirmed that the 911 will receive its first-ever hybrid powertrain this summer. The update will be part of the '992.2' mid-cycle refresh for the current generation.

Rather than focusing on electric-only range like a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), Porsche engineers have opted for a 'performance hybrid' system similar to those found in their 919 Hybrid Le Mans winner. The system utilizes a small, high-density battery and an electric motor integrated into the gearbox to provide instantaneous torque and fill the gap during turbo spool.

'The 911 is and remains the heart of our brand,' said Frank Moser, Vice President Model Line 911 and 718. 'Our goal was to make the 911 even faster and more emotional, and the hybrid technology delivers exactly that.' Tests indicate the new GTS model equipped with this system is significantly faster around the Nordschleife than its predecessor, while maintaining the iconic flat-six sound signature.
